James Braid redesigned the course, known locally as "the big course", in 1924 and it is doubtful if any of today's course architects could make better use of the land than Braid. Not long by modern standards at 5, 850-yards, Greenock is no pushover as its tight fairways and small undulating greens will test players at every level. The terrain is semi-moorland, with many tree-lined fairways and the odd burn and bunker to catch the slack shot.
The first five holes are played over undulating ground; the short uphill sixth takes the player to the upper part of the course, while the seventh tee affords one of the best views from any course in Scotland.
