The shoes are on sale via nike.com from tomorrow (May 13) and have been inspired McIlroy’s love of the Air Max 90 trainer, which prompted Nike designers to adapt the style into a performance golf shoe.
The Nike Air Zoom 90 IT designs will be the third new pair of shoes McIlroy has worn this season, after already wearing Nike’s Lunar Control 4 shoes released at the start of the year and the Flyknit Chukka shoes during tournament play.
In terms of features, the Nike Air Zoom 90 IT is packed full. The forefoot of the new design uses Zoom Air technology to give what Nike is calling ‘responsive cushioning’ while walking and the full-length Phylon midsole offers great comfort and stability, while also being lightweight.
The upper has been designed with a waterproof ‘one-piece bootie’ construction to keep your foot dry while playing as well as holding it in place during your swing. The rubber outsole means it can be worn on and off the course.
“I wear Air Max casually off the golf course all the time,†explained McIlroy. “Making it into a golf shoe really brings something new to the golf course. Not only is it different and very cool but it also performs well, giving me the comfort, traction and stability that I need.
“I dress pretty casually off the course, so it’s nice to have options. If I want to go straight from the course to somewhere else, I can do it and not feel like I stand out and look like a golfer.
