The club is located in the grounds of Lews Castle (which was the residence of Lord Leverhume) some half a mile outside Stornoway. It is signposted off the A857 Tarbert road. The course was originally founded in 1890 on the site of Stornoway airport, but the Ministry of Defence requisitioned this land for the second world war.
Following the war the club relocated to its present position. The course was progressively extended to its current layout. The course is short by today's standards but is an extremely tricky 18-hole undulating layout, with excellent views over the Minch. The terrain is peat based and there has been a substantial investment in drainage works.
