Watson excited by prospect another Old Course farewell

Tom Watson has reacted with delight to news that the Old Course in St Andrews will host the Senior Open Championship for the first time in the event’s history in 2018.

The American, a winner of the Open and Senior Open a combined eight times, brought the curtain down on his Open career in St Andrews last summer when he crossed the Swilcan Bridge in near-darkness on the Friday night afer missing the 36-hole cut.

That, he thought, would be his last competitive appearance on golf’s most famous links. However, news of the Senior Open going there in 2018 has changed all that

“I am thrilled that the Senior Open Championship will be staged over the Old Course in 2018,” said Watson.

“By agreeing to bring this wonderful championship to the home of golf, the R&A, European Tour and St Andrews Links Trust have allowed not just me, but many other great champions, an opportunity to return to a venue that means so much to everyone who plays the game.
