Newburgh-on-Ythan celebrates 125 years

Aberdeenshire club look to mark the occasion

NEWBURGH-ON-YTHAN Championship Links is celebrating a significant milestone this year, its 125th anniversary.  From 1888 through to the early 1890’s, Newburgh-on-Ythan was a nine-hole course developed on Newburgh Links beside the estuary of the River Ythan. The plan of those nine holes remains as holes ten to eighteen of the current course. In 1995, the club acquired more dune land to the south and built the new nine holes, which came in to play that same year.

The members are justifiably proud of the club and its history. They are putting on a number of events and activities throughout the year to mark this landmark occasion. A skins match involving Paul Lawrie, Ian Bratton, the club champion and the ladies champion has already taken place but amongst the events still to come are a members

Texas Scramble, a dance in the clubhouse, mens, seniors, ladies and mixed opens and a raffle with great prizes including a fourball at Trump International and a fourball at Castle Stuart. Tickets are available for all to enter with the draw to be held on September 21.

Newburgh-on-Ythan is a course that has much to offer those who enjoy links golf. The first nine holes are played at a higher level before descending down the back nine which are positioned beside the estuary. The opening nine holes are on dune land and offer some great views over the estuary. The ground in the back nine is softer and sandier than the preceding holes and boasts well maintained fairways and greens which are lined with punishing rough.
