COLIN MONTGOMERIE has pinpointed his maturity as being the reason behind his double major success on the Champions Tour.
The 51-year-old broke his major duck when he won the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in May, and he followed that up quickly with a play-off win in the US Senior Open less than a month later.
“You have to play intelligent golf, and I think I’ve matured enough to realise that and play more within myself sometimes -
to play away from some pins so you don’t make bogeys,” said Montgomerie. “You realise that in major golf, pars are usually good enough, especially in the USGA events.”
The Scot had held the solo lead through the first two rounds, only to stumble with a 74 in the third round. He fought back, though, with a 69 in the last round to muscle his way into a three-hole play-off with Gene Sauers, which he went on to win.
