MacIntyre follows in footsteps of Gallacher

Glencruitten lefty shoots 18-under to take title

GLENCRUITTEN’S Robert MacIntyre produced an incredible three consecutive 66s to win the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Scottish Boys Strokeplay by an emphatic nine-shots at The Roxburghe.

The 16-year-old left hander from Oban, winner of the Scottish Youths Championship in May, led by five shots going into the final day of the tournament which

was reduced to 54-holes due to heavy rain, before yet another impressive display landed him his second major title of the season.

Part of the Scotland Boys squad and Scottish Golf Academy, MacIntyre finished on 18-under par, ahead of Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson, who finished as runner up for the second consecutive year with an aggregate total of nine-under par.

“It feels really good to win and this week was up there with the Youths the way I played,” said the 16-year-old, who collected the trophy from event sponsor Stephen Gallacher. “After the rain, I felt that level par or thereabouts would be good enough to win, but my game came together really well on the back nine and I was delighted to shoot 66 again. It’s nice to have my name on the trophy alongside Stephen.”

The youngster’s performance also impressed Gallacher, who won the competition in both 1991 and 1992.

“To shoot 18-under par anywhere is great but to do it on an excellent course like The Roxburghe is very impressive,” said Gallacher. “He’s clearly a very good player and if he keeps working hard, I’m sure he can go on to do really well.

“This event is a great stepping stone, and hopefully a few of the boys can emulate previous winners like myself, Scott Jamieson and Lloyd Saltman.”
