GB&I triumph in St Andrews Trophy after close fought contest in Slovakia

Scotsman Calum Scott goes unbeaten all week and seals winning point

The St Andrews Trophy is back on home soil after Stuart Wilson’s GB&I team claimed a hard-fought win over their European rivals in Slovakia.

It was the first time the event had been staged since 2018, after the 2020 edition was cancelled, and the continent of Europe were the defending champions thanks to a 15.5-9.5 win in Finland four years ago.

However, an exceptionally strong team this time around helped GB&I win the trophy. Sam Bairstow and Barclay Brown, both of whom competed at the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, were in the team, and secured three and two-and-half-points respectively.

It was Scotsman Calum Scott, from Nairn, who sealed the victory for his team with a comprehensive 4&3 win over Austria’s Maximillian Steinlechner.

That win sealed an unbeaten week for Scott, where he earned three points.

Following the event, the young Scot had this to say:

“I didn’t know I was going to have the clinching point but it’s really good to get the one that got us over the line.

“I played really solid, just kept it on the fairways and greens and made six birdies with no bogeys.

“This is my first GB&I team event so it’s an honour to play – to win is even better. It’s a great feeling and good to win with these lads.”

After day one of the event, the GB&I team had built up an 8-4 lead, thanks largely to crucial points coming on the final hole at Penati.

However, it wasn’t plain sailing on the final day, as the Continent of Europe won five of their singles matches, making it a closer contest than the GB&I team might have liked.

“When we saw the Europeans coming back at us things got a little bit nervy,” Mark Power explained. “I just knew if I got my point hopefully the lads would pull through.”

Meanwhile, non-playing captain, Stuart Wilson, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted. The St Andrews Trophy is a special event for me and the guys. It’s been a while since it came back to GB&I.”
