The Czech Republic is one of the most visited countries in Europe right now – and it is currently in the middle of a major golf boom.
Lying at the centre of the Czech Republic, the capital of Prague is often portrayed with the Vltava River meandering through its heart, running under the remarkable Charles Bridge filled with pedestrians walking from Old Town Square towards the Prague castle perched atop the skyline. The Prague area has more than ten superb 18-hole courses within an hour from the heart of the city.
Karlstejn golf course is roughly 45 minutes from Prague and is the only Czech course in the area that has hosted a European Tour vent. It held the Chemapol Trophy Czech Open back in 1997, where the legendary Bernhard Langer walked away with the trophy. The resort offers 27 holes with the original 18-hole golf course offers unique views on the Karlstejn castle and challenging holes with wide but tricky greens along with several ponds and a hilly profile, making the course a fine sight.
Konopiste is another unique golf complex southeast from Prague. The biggest golf resort in the Czech Republic, which opened the first 18 holes in 2002. Players of all levels will enjoy the setting, which is cut sympathetically into the rolling hillside and forests with some inventive features. The Radecky and d´Este courses have been hosting many leisure and corporate golf tournaments. In addition to this, the venue offers a nine-hole public course as well as excellent practice facilities.
Albatross is considered the new star in this region. Set near the village Vysoký Újezd in the vicinity of Prague and easily accessible from the Prague airport, this championship test was built with a vision to create the No.1 course in the Czech Republic. This is where Jamie Donaldson secured his European Ryder Cup place in August when he won the D+D REAL Czech Masters. Other courses to try include West Bohemia, Marianske Lazne (also known as Marienbad), another European Tour venue, and Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) Combining Prague and Karlovy Vary, with the region’s spas and the country’s oldest courses, has become very popular for short golf breaks or week long holidays.
