Cally Palace, a private course that can only be played by the residents of the hotel, is the work of well-known golf architect Tom Macaulay and opened in 1994. The course is usually empty as there are no members and no competitions, so if you're in for a stay then it's a must play.

The 18-hole setup sits in a secluded spot by the hotel, and will no doubt provide avid golfers with a welcome change, as one of the more casual rounds going.

In terms of the challenge, Cally Palace can extend to over 6,000 yards from the back tees, and it's known for hosting a few difficult par-3s.

It's a nice mix of holes, and there are no shortage of views, from Cardoness Castle to Rutherford's Monument and the Fleet Estuary.
