Golf Courses in Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway offers 200 miles of expansive coastline and remarkable panoramas featuring rolling countryside of dramatic beauty. There is no question that these landscapes are ideal for golf course designers to make some magic.

From renowned course designer James Braid to Mackenzie Ross and Willie Fernie some of the most celebrated names in Scottish golf have played a part in the layouts which feature in this lovely region.

Arguably the most infamous course in the area is Southerness. A classic 18 hole links the course overlooks the Solway Firth and has staged numerous high profile tournaments since it first opened in 1947. The Scottish Amateur Championship has been held here a total of three times, most recently in 2005. The course is regularly featured within the top courses in the UK and Ireland and is well deserving of this title.

The Thornhill is another fine example of a classic course. Situated only a short journey on the Dumfries A76 it expertly combines parkland and heathland making it real fun to play. It is also where Andrew Colhart who played in the 1999 Ryder Cup won multiple European titles and learned to play.

Stranraer golf course was the final course to be designed by highly esteemed James Braid who was 5 times Open Champion. Found on the shores of Loch Ryan the 6,308 yard parkland course is set on gently undulating groud and offers superb views of the loch to Ailsa Craig and beyond.

There are many advantages to playing golf in Dumfries and Gallloway, including the warm rush of the Gulf Stream which provides the region with a mild climate, making play possible on all but a small number of days.
