Golf in Argyll & Bute, Oban and Mull

Spanning the area to the north-west of Glasgow and southwards reaching the Kintyre Peninsula, including Oban across Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Argyll & Bute boasts around 30 golf courses.
The Kintyre Peninsula itself has three fantastic courses all within close proximity of one another: Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty.

Machrihanish, incidentally, is home to one of the finest opening holes in the country if not all of golf. ‘The Battery’, as it is known, plays across the corner of a beach and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean to a fairway that hugs the coastline. It has to be seen to be believed.
Oban, meanwhile, is where you’ll find Glencruitten Golf Course, home to Scottish star Robert MacIntyre.

Head off the mainland and towards the Scottish Isles – amongst them Bute, Mull, Tiree and Islay – and you’ll find the great golf experiences keep on coming.

Bute is easy to reach from the mainland via the ferries at Colintraive and Wemyss Bay. The island has three courses to choose from, including the James Braid designed Rothesay which circles around Canada Hill and gives you great views across the Cowal Hills, Firth of Clyde and the Mull of Kintyre.

The Machrie on the Isle of Islay, meantime, is one of the most spectacular courses in Scotland. A bone fide links in every conceivable sense, it underwent a huge renovation at the direction former European Tour winner DJ Russell and re-opened in 2018. The combination of the views and the layout make it a true ‘Bucket List’ venue.
