When the Trump Organisation announced plans to rip up the old Kintyre Course at Turnberry and, effectively, re-do it, it's fair to say there was some concern. The Kintyre, after all, was a beloved track. Not on a par with the Ailsa but a formidable and fun challenge in its own right.
The concerns, as it turned out, were misplaced. In the King Robert The Bruce Course, the Ayrshire resort now has a course that is - as far as many are concerned - the equal of the Ailsa and worthy of staging the biggest championships.
Designed by Martin Ebert, the brains behind the reborn Ailsa, it occupies mostly the same footprint as the Kintyre but makes far better use of the land at its disposal.
In particular, the four completely new holes that have been introduced atop Bain’s Hill - in particular, the dramatic ninth - are as good a stretch of holes as you will find anywhere in Scotland.
It is, without much doubt, a modern masterpiece built on ancient and historic land. Stunning.
