Widely recognised as the oldest golf club in the world, the Royal Burgess Golfing society in Edinburgh boasts a championship golf course near the capital city centre, designed by Willie Park Jr.
A true example of parkland golf, the 18 holes here are some of the finest in Scotland and were set out in 1895 on the advice of Old Tom Morris. It remained largely unaltered until 1945 when James Braid was invited to advise on the layout, where former Open Champions Henry Cotton, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Tony Jacklin have all played.
Lush fairways flanked by trees are joined onto beautifully smooth greens to make this a premier golf course. The most picturesque is the 11th hole, a 348-yard par-4 which features a stunning stone bridge.
Well known for its challenging par-4s, the 4th, 7th and 17th provided fine examples, while the 18th is a simple, but deceptive way to end the round.
