One of Scotland's finest golf destinations, Newmachar boasts two Dave Thomas-designed courses in the heart of Aberdeen.

The Hawkshill is a championship course and an idyllic heathland which has been compared by seasoned golf travel writers to Gleneagles' King's course and the Rosemount at Blairgowrie. High praise, indeed, for a course that opened as recently as 1990.

This is a golf course that unashamedly sets itself out as one of the toughest in Scotland - and it delivers on that promise with aplomb. There is water in play on no fewer than five holes on the Hawksill, and Thomas's signature bunkering is plentiful. And if you avoid those, the ever-maturing woodland that flanks much of the course will certainly catch any stray ones.

That said, a day on Newmachar's 36 holes is a day well spent. And you'll more than earn that post-round refreshment in the spectacular clubhouse.
