Golf Courses in East Lothian

Affectionately known as ‘Scotland’s Golf Coast’, East Lothian more than lives up to its lofty billing.

It extends along a 40-mile stretch of coastline, from Musselburgh to Dunbar, and, in addition to being home to some of the finest courses in the country, if not the world, it also has the distinction of being the sunniest part of Scotland. According to recent data, it enjoys an average of 1,400 hours of sunlight every year – perfect for golfers!

Without much doubt, Muirfield is the most famous course in the region, not least because it has hosted 16 editions of the Open Championship. The home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, only St Andrews and Prestwick have hosted golf’s oldest major more often.

Close by, you’ll find The Renaissance – host venue to the Genesis Scottish Open – and the two courses at Archerfield, the Fidra and the Dirleton.

Gullane and its three courses are also nearby, as are North Berwick’s quirky West Links and, on the opposite side of the town, The Glen.

Musselburgh – another former Open venue – and Longniddry, Aberlady and Kilspindie are just as deserving of your attention, which is to say nothing of Dunbar and Winterfield.

Heading inland, you can’t miss Royal Musselburgh. Not to be confused with Musselburgh Links, its Old Club Cup has the distinction of being the oldest golf trophy still played for anywhere in the world, dating back to 1774.

Truly, any time spent playing golf in East Lothian, is time well spent.
