Special Night at Golf Awards
Picture Exclusive Relive one of the best nights of the season
Before a sell-out crowd of almost 600 guests, the curtain was pulled back on the 2013 season in stunning style with the game’s annual showpiece - the Scottish Golf Awards.
On an evening to savour at the Hilton Glasgow, winners from across all levels of Scottish golf were crowned after a fantastic 12 months at amateur and pro level. Guest of honour was Sandy Lyle, MBE, with the two-time Major champion picking up a richly-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award - 25 years after his Masters triumph at Augusta National. European Tour winners Stephen Gallacher and Alastair Forsyth plus top amateur Jack McDonald were among the golfers in attendance, along with other Scottish sporting stars such as Gordon Strachan, Craig Brown, Eve Muirhead and Tony Stanger.
Lyle enjoyed a standing ovation before collecting his award from Scotland manager Strachan, the 55-year-old joining Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie and Sam Torrance in the nation’s Hall of Fame. Lyle, who enjoyed watching video tributes from Torrance, Jose Maria Olazabal and Bernhard Langer, said: “What an honour it was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in front of Scotland’s golf fans in Glasgow, so close to my family heritage in Milngavie. It was also wonderful to have my wife, Jolande, and four children present.”
Strachan added: “The moment that defines Sandy is that shot at the last hole at Augusta in 1988. When he played the shot in, I actually got off the settee and was shouting ‘get in the hole, get in the hole’, virtually chasing the ball into the hole’. It is one of the most iconic moments in sport.”
The evening, jointly-organised by the SGU and SLGA, again proved a superb occasion, with guests mingling with the celebrities and having photos taken with the Claret Jug and the Ryder Cup.
The awards also recognised the efforts of those involved at the grass roots level of the game, with the RBS ClubGolf Volunteer of the Year award going to Shirley Murray from Torvean, while Central region club Strathendrick triumphed in the RBS ClubGolf Junior Club of the Year.
Key sponsors included Aberdeen Asset Management, Fairstone, Jewson and RBS. View other great photos from the night on the SGU’s Facebook page.
