Members to take Kirky Shield back to former glory

MEMBERS at three local clubs are aiming to bring the Kirkintilloch Shield back to its former glory by restarting the competition. Golfers at Kirkintilloch, Hayston and Lenzie are all joining together to stage the competition which was first staged in 1964.

The event was founded after various celebrations were held to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Kirkintilloch being granted the liberty of a Burgh. As part of the celebrations a golf tournament was instigated with the event held at Lenzie Golf Club because Kirkintilloch and Hayston already held open competitions.

The Kirkintilloch Shield will be played in rotation by the clubs as they look to return the competition to its former standing. This year it will be held at Lenzie Golf Club on July 28 as someone will get the chance to follow in the footsteps of some famous past winners including Scottish Amateur Champions Allan Brodie, Davd Carrick and Graham Rankin.

The prize fund for the tournament totals at more than £1,100 as Kirkintilloch, Hayston and Lenzie attempt to make the tournament a staple of the Scottish golfing calendar once again. If you are wondering how you can enter the competition – entries can be submitted through the Scottish Golf Union website – www.scottishgolf.org, an entry form can be downloaded from www.lenziegolfclub.com or you can email kirkyshield@gmail.com to ensure your place.
