Just to the north of Largs is the busy public course at Routenburn, the very place where a young Sam Torrance perfected his craft under the charge of his father, Routenburn's long-standing and now retired professional, Bob.
The views from the golf course are to be expected here but those from Routenburn are unmatched. Looking over the Firth of Clyde, Arran, the Cumbraes and beyond, it's an excellent spot for a game of golf.
The climb to the third green may seem daunting but the view over the town and the Isle of Cumbrae is fair compensation. This is, generally, a heathland course with a mixture of trees, although the thick rough is more akin to a lush parkland course.
That offers up most of the challenge at Routenburn because the fairways are in top condition. The James Braid-design is only 5,200 yards long, but sloping greens and blind tee shots will make you work for par.
